As students were getting ready to leave school for summer vacation all 2nd grade girls gathered in the Chapin Street cafeteria to learn about a national program- Girls on the Run- that will be offered to each of them when they return as 3rd graders. This fall, over a ten week period of time (September - November) according to their website, students will be inspired to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

Nikki Reed, Chapin Street Principal, explained, “I am excited to be able to bring this program to our 3rd grade girls next year as it will support our ongoing efforts to expose all of our students to being mindful, embracing our differences, supporting each other and believing we all can achieve.   Three of our paraprofessionals - Lynn McCready, Patti Almeida and Kelley Foley - have agreed to be the coaches who will be supporting the students, both physically and emotionally.  It’s not just about running - it’s about supporting the total child.”

“Participants will meet with the three coaches two times per week, after school” said Ashley Antoine, Chapin Street Adjustment Counselor. “They will be learning acceptance and how to get along with others in a happy, healthy way.”

McCready added, “The three of us (coaches) hope to help the 3rd grade girls at Chapin Street School to set, and meet goals, become more self confident and encourage them to be more involved within their community.”

Foley explained that at the end of the program, in November,  students will have the opportunity to participate in a 5K race (location to be determined).  Each girl was given informational paperwork and an application to take home, introducing the program to their parents.

“We are hopeful that many girls will enroll in the program,” stated Reed.  “There is a fee associated with participation, but we want parents to know that no girl will be turned away because of financial constraints.  Every incoming 3rd grade girl at Chapin Street School this year is welcome to be a member of our team.”
