Steven Sawyer, VFW 3235 Member Military Order of the Purple Heart; Keith Buckhout, SR Vice Commander District 7 VFW Post 801 Holyoke; George Murray, VFW National Council Member, VFW Post 3236 and Christine Bassett, VFW Post 3236 Commander, District 7 Commander, visited all 3rd grade classrooms at Chapin Street School today to educate students about the American flag.

During their visit the Veterans demonstrated how to properly fold the flag, discussed the history and various regulations and rules of the flag and shared some experiences of their time in the military. Students learned why they were required to wear gloves when folding the flag, what each of the three colors of the flag represent and why none of the red is allowed to show when the flag is folded properly.  They also learned why the flag is folded in the shape of a triangle.  As the photos below highlight, students were also given the opportunity to participate in the folding of the flag first hand.

Principal Nikki Reed was pleased to see the positive response from the students,  commenting, “It was great to see our students learn about the flag from true heroes-- our Veterans.”
