Chapin Street School’s collection of “Pennies for Veterans” for Wreaths Across America came to a close on this past Friday, December 9th. After only six days of collecting loose change, students raised an amazing total of $793.18.
In addition to the student donations, another $450.00 was brought to the school by generous community members. Staff members also reported that while they were at LUSO Federal Credit Union counting the change, LUSO generously added $100.00 to the total and waived the usual change counting fee.
When the final tally was made 3rd grade teachers and organizers of the collection, Mrs. Michele Manganaro-Thompson and Mrs. Carrie Joseph, were proud to report that the grand total raised was $1,343.18; enabling the purchase of ninety wreaths at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Agawam, Massachusetts.
"The students, staff and community were very receptive to this whole effort," said Manganaro-Thompson, "and we know they will be excited to continue their efforts to honor our Veteran’s for next year’s Wreaths Across America ceremony at the Agawam cemetery."
A contingency from Chapin Street School, both staff and students, are planning on attending the Wreaths Across America event at the Agawam Veteran Cemetery on Saturday, December 17th to help place the wreaths on the graves of our local Veterans.
Eric Segundo, Director of Veterans Services for the Town of Ludlow, accepts the check from Chapin Street students.
